Dr. Leigha M. Nielsen graduated with honors from the University of Houston College of Optometry. She also holds degrees in Biology and Business Management. During the course of her studies, she participated in research focusing on keratoconus, a degenerative eye disease, which was presented at the Associates for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the American Academy of Optometry (AAO).
Her professional memberships include the Texas Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association, and the Bexar County Optometric District Society. Dr. Nielsen practices full-scope Optometry and works with patients of all ages, specializing in standard and specialty contact lens fittings, minor ocular surgeries, diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia, anterior segment pathologies, cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal pathologies. She also handles a great deal of refractive corrective surgery co-management and cataract surgery co-management.
A strong believer in community and family, Dr. Nielsen plays an active role in the city of Schertz where she owns and practices at Texas State Optical, and is excited to take that same approach to her new location in New Braunfels. Both of these locations specifically highlight the importance of caring for the eyes of the entire family with specific pediatric care designed to provide children with comprehensive testing and therapy to give them every advantage in life.
Children having that ability to confidently go to school and learn without the struggles and disadvantages vision related problems can incur is why she has relocated her full-service vision therapy clinic, Nielsen Vision Development Center, to be housed at Texas State Optical – Oak Run. Dr. Michael Castro is a graduate of the UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry. He earned his undergraduate degree in Accounting from Texas A&M University in College Station.
During his training, he focused on treatment of ocular diseases including management in diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration. He is also well-versed in the treatment of diseases of the anterior segment and cornea with a particular interest in dry eye management.
His professional memberships include the Texas Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association and the Bexar County Optometric Society.

Valerie began her optical career in 2004 and earned certification through the American Board of Opticianry in 2010. She has experience in all areas of optometry including patient testing, contact lens fitting, frame-styling, insurance and fabrication of glasses in the lab.
As the office manager, Valerie is focused on making your visit is exceptional from start to finish. Her goal is to provide each patient with personalized eye care while upholding the prompt and professional service you deserve.
She likes to spend her free time on outdoor hiking adventures, watching football, taking fun family trips and meeting new friends. She also enjoys painting, reading and watching scary movies!
Hi, my name is Jeannette Pena! I’m an awesome mother of three gorgeous girls and currently have an Associates of Applied Science in Healthcare Administration with an emphasis in Medical Practice Management and am actively pursuing my Bachelors in Healthcare Administration. On my spare time away from work and books, I enjoy family time with my significant other and our family!
Teresa is a TSO Supertech dedicated to providing quality care to every patient she meets. Her retirement after seventeen years in the field of education was short lived as her passion for learning new things led her to take on the challenge of beginning a new career as an optometric technician. She’s currently working on her CPOA certification to further her knowledge in the field.
She married her high school sweetheart and they have a son, two dogs and two cats. She and her husband have been involved in ministry since 1990 and in 2004 they started a home church where they continue to serve the community. When she’s not hard at work, she likes spending time in her vegetable garden and sharing the fruits of her labor with family and friends. She enjoys a variety of music genres and is seriously considering going from playing percussion instruments to playing drums! She loves to BBQ and entertain those near and dear to her.
Joselina joins the TSO team with over 30 years of experience as an optician. She comes from the Hill Country town of Boerne and spent part of her childhood in Michigan. She is certified in medical transcriptions with TEEX, which she studied for at A&M in Fredericksburg.
Joselina is an expert at finding the right frame to compliment not only your face but also your personality and hopes to provide you with a custom frame selection experience. She has a passion and drive to help patients fill their prescriptions in a way that best suits their lifestyle.
Joselina enjoys spending time with her 12 grandchildren, 3 beautiful daughters and one handsome son. The bigger the family, the better! She loves going for long relaxing rides on the Harley with her fiancé Andres and has many hobbies including crochet, creating vintage heirloom ornaments, collecting Hot Wheels and shooting pool.
Hello! My name is Megan, I am fairly new to this practice but I have already learned so much! I have been in the optical industry for about four years and I enjoy this profession greatly. I love helping patients with frame selections or with any questions they have regarding glasses or contact lenses. I am here to help in any way I can and my main goal is making sure our patients leave here with a wonderful experience.
I am newly married this year and my husband and I have a seventeen month old son who runs our world. We enjoy trips out to Canyon Lake and going to South Padre beach whenever we can make it!
Elizabeth is our lab technician and oversees the production of your glasses. She started her journey in the optical business in 2011. She fell in love with optics and wanted to learn everything about her new field! Liz is from California but is happy to call Texas her home now.
She is a mother to an 8-year-old boy and in her free time loves to spend it with him watching movies and eating pizza!
Michael has worked with Dr. Nielsen for over two years, helping manage all aspects of her businesses and acting as her representative. With over 11 years of experience as a personal and executive assistant, Michael brings peace of mind and structure to our doctor’s busy life, allowing her to focus on providing excellent patient care for you and your family. While currently spending the majority of his time in our new Oak Run location, he can also be found at Dr. Nielsen’s Texas State Optical in Schertz where we continue to bring multi-generational family eye care to our neighboring community.
Michael and his wife have two dogs, a labrador and maltese, and are currently building a house in the New Braunfels area where they are looking forward to calling home. When scheduling free time, he and his wife love traveling, exploring different cultures and foods, and meeting new people.
